Black squirrels have apparently been deliberately introduced into a number of communities around the USA. The story I heard when I was growing up in Rock Island IL was that they were introduced by a camp commander on Arsenal Island and escaped to the surrounding communities on ice floes:

When I lived in skokie there were lots of them. I have never seen one out here in wheaton. The squirrels out here are a brown gray.

They are found on the campus of Princeton University in New Jersey.

I'm front St. Louis and never saw one until we vacationed several years ago in South Haven Michigan. They were all over the place. We got some strange looks from the locals. I guess we acted like we've never seen squirrels before. Just not black squirrels.

I just seen a black squirrel in wood dale its second one ive seen in two weeks 12/08/i4 thanks glenn

I've seen them in Michigan years ago, guess they migrated south.
