That corner has a huge public housing highrise, which attracts crime and drug activities

And the infamous Hotel Chateau. I think that causes more problems than the high-rise Gill Park Cooperative you speak of, but I wouldn't mind seeing both disappear.

It's totally plausible that I would be at that intersection at 11:40 p.m. some time... I hate these shootings that are close to home.

No kidding. There seems to have been quite few in the Wicker Park/UK Village area recently, moreso than in the recent past (e.g. the past 5-10 years). Recently a man was fatally shot about 1/2 a mile down the street from me and I go past the scene on my way to work when I ride my bike. It is hard not to think about how he just died laying in the street when I do.

Here's an article with more info on the Ukrainian Village shooting. It doesn't appear to be a theft or random shooting:

Quote:
"Two residents of separate houses near the corner of Grand and Wolcott, both of whom requested anonymity, told Chicago Journal they heard yelling between a man and a woman on the street between about 1:30 and 3 a.m. Sunday morning. One resident said he heard the man yell, "I'm gonna get my gun and kill that son of a b-" as the woman tried to calm him down."
A lot of the shootings that happen in "safer" areas are early morning drunken arguments where one of the drunks has a gun and just loses their sh** during the argument. Shootings like this (and domestic arguments) account for a large portion of the shootings in Chicago.

Grand and Wolcott is not in Ukrainian Village . Furthermore Grand and Wolcott is not considered a very safe area.

Where is your proof that the victim and/or the perp were drinking? I see none in your link nor in other stories I have read about this incident.

This seems like a jealousy and/or revenge killing.

No, most shootings in Chicago are gang related or robberies.

I was quite aware it wasn't random, most of the shooting that occur around here are not (the woman who was working at the bar who got killed by a stray bullet last month was an unusual exception). Regardless of the circumstances, I don't like people being shot and killed close to where I live. End of story.

As far as the 'neighborhood' that Grand and Wolcott is (West-Town for those who must know, which encompasses Ukrainian Village, Noble Square, etc), it is very close to Ukrainian Village and quibbling over that is akin to quibbling over the East Village and Ukrainian village when two people live withing a block of the border, the lines are easily blurred, and I'm more focused the fact that a man got shot in the street rather the it happened a few streets away from most recognized boundaries of Ukrainian Village. When I heard last summer that a kid got shot in wicker park when he technically got shot 1/2 block south of the boundary of Wicker Park, I didn't really get all that excited about that small error in the article, ultimately, it wasn't like the kid got shot in Garfield Park and they reported Wicker Park.

Personally, I wasn't aware of Grand and Wolcott having a reputation for being particularly unsafe, and I've lived in this area for over five years.

Grand and Wolcott is fine. There's rarely any crime there anymore. North of Grand is residential, but it gets industrial pretty quickly south of Grand, and that provides a buffer against the ghetto to the south. I've spent a LOT of time in that area, as some of my best friends own a two flat on Race Street near Wolcott. Also, a co-worker lives there. They all call it "Ukranian Village", even though they know it's in some weird part of West Town that's not technically Ukranian Village. Close enough. They can walk up to the Chicago Avenue strip in under ten minutes.
