Are any of you guys golfers? Where are the best (read cheapest) courses in the area? I know golf season won't start for a while, and my knee isn't healed up from surgery enough to play, but I'm starting to catch the bug.

Robert Black. Pay for the players advantage (PA) and its something around $12 per nine on weekends. Marovitz is a bit nicer but you will pay $20 for 9 with PA. As far as I know none of the city courses are "nice" -- you get what you pay for. I've heard some of the southshore courses are a bit nicer. That said, I belive they are under new managment, so we will see.

I've heard the forest preserve courses are a decent deal, kept up nicer and you get 18 holes.

Attributes typical of a Chicago city course:

Traps are really dirt as opposed to sand, rarely are they groomed.
Greens are in pretty bad shape
Fairways are like the rough, roughs are like the heavy rough, etc.
Soils are hard, if you hit fat you are in trouble.
On busy weekends, can take almost 3 hours to play 9 holes

Other than that, everyone out there is having a great time--they know they aren't paying for a nice course.

Oh yea, you get a lot of hacks, and sometimes the highschoolers at the Black can be slow--less of a problem at Morovitz because of the higher price.

My favorite course is not exactly in Chicago, but it's close. It is a Public Course. Chick Evans golf course on Golf Road in, I believe, Skokie.

Also, if you go to any Chicago Park District courses, like Chick Evans, check out the website and you can print out coupons. You can golf at a course like Chick Evans with a cart for $25 or so.

Hank0604...you really might want to check out the park district course right on the Lake at 3600 North Recreation Dr (just north of Addison). A favorite and one of the better city courses:
