Hey everyone. I have 4 more weeks of school left and then I will be moving to Chicago for an internship for school credit. I've never been to the area, but grew up in northern Minnesota so the cold isn't a problem. I was wondering if some of you could tell me what the city is like. I would like to live around the downtown area and am a musician and music major so I was wondering if there are any neighborhoods with a good population of artists and musicians that I should check out? I'm moving from Phoenix, which I happened to find rather boring while living here because everything is so spread out. I'm assuming Chicago, due to it's density, is a lot more entertaining for a young, soon to be college grad.

Any comments, corrections of my assumptions, etc.. are really appreciated! Thanks.

The neighborhoods typically favored by young folks include Wicker Park, Logan Square, Lakeview, Edgewater, Rogers Park and a few others that aren't coming to me right now

Artists and musicians are kind of all over the place. There are plenty in Rogers Park, Edgewater and Wicker Park. Lakeview also has its share (albeit those with a touch more rent money than you'd pay up in RP).

Check out the very first thread of the Chicago forum as it has great info on each neighborhood.

Good luck with your move.

p.s. for finding rentals...check out www.chicago.craigslist.org (broken link) and http://classifieds.chicagoreader.com...tion=oid%3A122

Thanks a lot for the info! I was going to move to San Francisco but ended up not being able to find a studio apartment for under a grand a month in the city. Is Chicago comparable, in liveliness, to SF? Sorry if that sounds stupid.

In what regard? If you mean the art and music scene I would say yes. Check out the gigs at Chicago Reader and it will give you an idea of the music scene.

That's a source of heated debate. But I can tell you this much, Chicago is a lot closer to SF than to Phoenix in this regard.
