Hi,

I am looking to buy a single family home in the city and currently rent in Logan Square. I have spent some time in Bronzeville going to the YMCA and have been impressed by the nice houses, relatively low prices, and "geographic" benefits (good public transport options, relatively close to downtown and the lake and US Cellular and the IIT are right there). The people also seem to be generally nice. However, there are definitely parts of it with an odd mix of new construction, nice houses, boarded up houses, and vacant lots.

Are you familiar with Bronzeville? What do you think? Is it safe? (The crime stats online imply it is.) I would love to hear thoughts before deciding the settle down and buy there.

Thanks!

Any more definite location data ?? There are pockets of renewed Bronzeville that would have better stats then 'old school' Bronzeville ..Plus, if Chicago gets the Olympics, there could be a LOT of construction near where you're looking; Olympics might be a plus for property values ( if not already priced in), but living near an area with large redevelopment activity for a few years would have some minuses ( Traffic, Noise, Dirt, Fleeing Rodents ..) ..

Here is a tool that allows you to map what crimes have been reported in Chicago, given a street address:
Crimes › 8 blocks around 3487-3499 S. Wabash Ave. › Assault | EveryBlock Chicago (http://chicago.everyblock.com/crime/streets/wabash-ave/3487-3499s/8-blocks/by-primary-type/assault/ - broken link)

I am only ever really on State heading up toward Cermak from 35th and that area is the site of the Ickes Homes (some remain, others are cleared). There's a "Big Daddy" liquor/convenience store and a White Castle on the east side of the road. That area in particular seems really desolate in an unnerving way and I would be uncomfortable walking there after dark. I am sure that the residential areas off the main drag are more populated than that streath though.

Some new info on what is going on in Bronzeville:

By Paul Meincke

"May 30, 2009 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- You could call it the 21st century version of a 1960s commune, and some folks in the Bronzeville neighborhood are trying to get one started. Saturday they held an open house to explain what it's all about..."

^^good luck with that. i am sure a lot of people might get behind the idea but when it comes to the execution who is going to want to completely uproot their lives and make themselves available 2 or 3 times a week to cook for 150 people? i don't even cook for my family 2 or 3 times a week let alone divide up responsibilities for who is to mow a 1/2 acre of grass, or clean community toilets or tend to building maintenance.
