So a new Best Buy is opening in the Hancock Tower on May 16th. Do you think they will have any sales or specials for the grand opening? And is this really a good spot for a Best Buy?

You wouldn't think people would head to the Mag Mile to shop for electronics. But what would I know.

But Apple stores aren't located everywhere, like Best Buy is. Most of the tourists who shop the Mag Mile go there because many of the stores there cannot be found in many smaller towns. The first Nordstrom, Apple Store, J Crew, and many others that I first came across were the ones on Michigan Ave.

Best Buy, though, is about as rare as a Target, so I think it's strange that tourists would waste any time at Best Buy when there are so many stores that cannot be found in their respective home-towns.

They'll sell largely impulse portable items for shoppers on foot such as ipod's, etc. Or maybe a spiffy new set of headphones that just broke on the spot. I bet they will make a killing on delivery for local residents.

But it's not like there aren't several other Best Buy locations on the North Side for people to use... I guess this will be convenient for people who work downtown. I think it should be on State Street, however!

That's what I was thinking, the location could be good for serving businesses in the Loop, but how many businesses buy their electronics from a retail store?

Is there any information on the size of the store? It could very well be the culmination of the specialty urban Best Buys that were tested out some years ago. These stores were all designed for an urban environment and are more specialized and smaller. There were three different concepts; technology for boomers, technology for homemakers and technology for young professionals. When I left Best Buy they were starting to close a few of the boomer concepts. I wonder if what they are putting in Hancock is completely different from what you think of as a typical Best Buy.
