We're supposed to stay at least 3 years, we'll see after that time what we want to do. after reading all your posts we have a better idea where to look for and we have a list of schools. we're going to to some research on the north suburbs, why nobody mentionned Evanston, it's close to Chicago and has the metra (is it safe by the way ?) ? 1979, i'm from France ! Sorry but i did not get the post about the gang... if it worth it can somebody explain ?

Yoyo: I've been in your position quite a few times from the other side. Based on my experience and knowing that you are European, I would live in River East/Gold Coast/Streeterville and send my kids to Ogden.

No one mentioned Evanston because the title of your thread says "in the city", and there is a separate fourm section for suburban questions.
But yes, Evanston would be a good choice for you! It's a wonderful suburb, but there are a few problem areas you will want to avoid living in.

Evanston is one of the North Shore suburbs I did
not mention, because, although it is one of the few suburbs with a liberal political heritage, it is very similar to Chicago's north side neighborhoods (nearly exactly a match for them demographically, including some crime). To get to the even nicer parts of the North Shore, you have to go up to Wilmette (sounds French, huh?) which has been claimed to be the 7th best place in the US to raise children:
