I am moving from the south suburbs to the City for work. What are the areas that Firefighters/Police live. We have 3 kids so need good schools and hopefully not too expensive. North/South side suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

On the North Side there are a lot of policemen and firefighters in neighborhoods like Norwood Park, Jefferson Park, Portage Park, Mayfair, Sauganash, Edgebrook, etc. Some of these neighborhoods are pricier than others. For instance, a guy on a police officer's salary living in Sauganash has probably owned that home for quite a while.

Perhaps a south sider can give you more up-to-date information about the South Side.

Basically any neighborhood on the South Side with a lot of white people will have plenty of cops and firefighters, sans the South Loop and Hyde Park.

I've noticed on the south side if a neighborhood isn't overrun by gang violence and is reasonably priced it is guaranteed to have been described somewhere as a bastion of cops and firefighters.

Mmm, firefighters.

Many of them have homes throughout the city. Apartments, even. The younger ones usually have flats or studios, while the older gentlemen of Chicago's distinguished firefighting brigade have homes they generally inherited.

Which really just tells you that I generally answered "yours".

I opened this thread hoping it was a "where to pick-up firefighters" kind of thing. Alas.

Years ago many lived south of Midway in Scottsdale and Ashburn. Check with the department to see if Hometown might be an option as well as I believe at one time it was.

Just curious, how did you get the Firefighting position with CFD? Did you take the test in May 06?
