Hello all,

Sorry if this is the 1,000,000,000+ job thread, but I'm looking for some ideas. I am currently looking for a job in Chicago before I possibly start professional school next fall. I graduated from a top public undergraduate university with an Econ degree. Although I'm not in Chi at the moment, I stayed there for a awhile several weeks to interview for a couple jobs I found through a temp agency.

Anyone have any suggestions on finding short-term employment in the city? I'm pretty open on type of jobs...just want something that pays at least $16/hr. Thanks!

1) Don't use the name pootietang on your resume
2) I doubt there any temporary jobs that are at least $16/hr. in this economy
3) With the holidays coming up, you might be able to land something in retail/service industry.

If you do happen to find a temp. job for the money you are looking for, let the rest of us know.

Good luck

If you have mortgage processing skills you can get contract jobs in the $15-18/hr range.

A bachelor's in psychology gets my husband $8.50 an hour. His employer just hired a master's degree holder for $9 an hour. Right now, a job is a job. I second the retail suggestion for now, although it won't pay much... the key is that it pays SOMETHING.

Ha, it's just a quick name I made up to register.....actually the name of a movie. I guess if people knew of these types of jobs, they wouldn't tell people on this board, lol. In this economy, people are like hungry sharks waiting to pounce on whatever job becomes available.

What exactly are mortgage processing skills?

Yeah, I know it's tough when $9/hr what you have to settle for. It would prob takea bit more than that for me since I'm trying to relocate to Chicago though.

There are still good paying jobs around the nation. I got submitted by a recruiter for Cummins in Madison WI for $35 / hr doing Proe Sheetmetal.

Why does it not surprise me you would apply for a job at a place called Cummins?

Ha, surprised you remembered me. Yeah, as much as I'd like to do it, it's just too much of a hassle right now for the timeframe I'm working with. I actually looked at some other locales also, but nothing came of it. It's tough market, even for teachers...and not only in Chicago. If something pops up I'll look into it, but I need to focus on getting something for the meantime.

That's good to hear, though I have no such carpentry skills. I believe the recruiter/staffing agency route would be my best bet, but it's hard to do that from out of state. Can't afford to keep flying back and forth for interviews.
