In reality, these people know who are in the gangs, they know who has the guns, but they don't do anything about it.
This cycle of violence/ghetto life will continue to perpetuate itself until the culture is changed, not the laws (the gun laws are already on the books and obviously aren't having much of an impact).
Yep, true true.

Operation Ceasefire, a non profit that works to control violence on the west side, recently lost 7 of its ten workers because of budget cuts and gun violence escalated. The last time they lost workers, the same thing happened. It is a vicious cycle, and totally sad. A lot of the victims are innocent - people who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, children. It's horrible that this cannot be controlled.

Really? Then why is there gang graffiti all over the far southwest side that didn't exist even five years ago? Why have there been multiple gang related shootings on the far southwest side over the past few years? That also wasn't happening as recently as five years ago. Why did Oak Lawn just start a full time gang unit? No, it's not really dangerous out here, but current trends are not good.

Because gentrification and the razing of several project highrises have forced low income and problem people to places with cheap rent. Check out the blotters for the southwest suburbs when you get a chance. There are many more gang related offenses there then there were 5 years ago.

I know. I live there, and that's my point to all these people who keep insisting that the city is safer then ever if you just avoid much of the south and west sides. I'm not living in fear, but I think I have some reasonable cause for concern.
