First let me tell you I am 21 year old female traveling with a 6 yr old a 7 yr old and a 10 month old. I come from a town of about 4000 people. I have been to the city but never alone. I am coming into Chicago on Amtrak early(9:45am) Thursday morning(for a funeral) My uncle lives in Crystal Lake so he told me to take the "L" to there and he would pick me up. I need any advice you can give. I am terrified. Tell me anything I need to know.

Check out this website for directions: http://www.transitchicago.com/

Don't be scared. The commuter train you want may not leave from the Amtrak station but the proper station is within a short taxi ride. The el does not go to Crystal Lake -- you will have to take Metra. The above website has a good trip planner function but you need to know the address of your destination. There is also a telephone number to call a live person. Good luck!

I just got an email from my uncle. Your right I am supposed to take metra. Is it within walking distance from Union Station. He said I am to get on at Ogilvie. I pulled up a map and it doesnt look that far but you could tell me better. Can I take a stroller on metra?

Its maybe four blocks from Union Station where you will disembark from Amtrak and there will be a lot of people out and about in early morning so it should be a pleasant walk. The Ogilvie Center is a new, shiny train station on Randolph street. If they don't allow strollers it would probably violate federal law.

Oglivie is what used to be called the Northwestern train station. Since you are travelling with kids, hail a cab from Union Station.
My condlences to your family and good luck.

I am not a Chicago native, but I will going to school there soon and am obsessed with the city...I have taken Amtrak into Union Station several times and I think it would be kind of pointless to hail a cab rather than to walk 3 blocks (depending on which door you go out). I have relatives on the far North side so I have walked between the two stations before and it really is pretty short. I guess it depends on the size of your bags, though! FYI 3 city blocks is a little less than 1/4 mile I think, so yeah, not bad at all.
