Hi, there -

I'm coming from out of town to visit my great-grandparents graves for the first time at the Oak Woods Cemetery in Woodlawn between S Greenwood Ave and S Ellis Ave. It would mean a lot to me to visit. Do I need to bring an armed escort?

Thanks in advance!

The cemetery is its own world. There is no problem visiting it. Even the surrounding area isn't really so bad any more -- I walk around there in the day from time to time, don't notice much of anything intimidating except maybe along 63rd. Stay east of cottage.

My suggestion is IF you do not know the area well, please do get a map.

Regardless that whatever cemetery you visit in Chicago or suburbs, you should just follow a few safety tips. Lock your car and put anything of value in your trunk prior to entering the cemetery.

Common sense for anywhere you go.

The streets are straight and they are numbered. Think of graph paper.

Most folks can navigate pretty well around there. Check out Harold Washington's grave if you go.

Actually, in the cemetery itself make sure you stay alert and try not to go alone. I'm not being paranoid. I've been to visit cemeteries in suburban Cook County, and they had notices from the sheriff's department posted with this advice due to problems with thefts and robberies. I'm sure the advice is at least as valid in the city.

Several years ago, several purse snatchings occurred in Catholic cemeteries located in the southwest and near west suburbs. The targeted victims were widows who had left their purses on the front seat of their cars while they visited graves. The offenders were eventually caught but it certainly brought home the fact that there is not much protection to people visiting cemeteries regardless of the neighborhood.

Thank you all for your comments - I had a very uneventful visit to Oak Woods - the staff was quite helpful.
