Chicago??? (Skokie, Des Plaines, Wheeling: to rent, school, living)

Hey okay, I'm writing this for my parents because they don't know how to use the internet (So stone age!)
We're looking to move to Chicago. The North/ Near North area. Only problem, we don't know what town to move to. Were family of hispanic, caucasian, asian and native american ethnicity. (Mom- 1/2 asian & hispanic Dad- 1/2 caucasian and native american Me- 25% asian, hispanic, caucasian and native american) We are very cultural and we would like a very mixed area (of ethnic backgrounds that is). Education, activity and cost of living are our main concerns. We want an area with a good school system, (from music to sports and academics.) Lots of things to do, like malls and etc. Also are they're lakes near by? Or other nature-like places? Like hiking mountains and horse ranches and such? That would be nice. As far as safety goes, were not to concerned... there are twenty of us (including parents) and we all have records... yes even me. So I think we are a danger. Are there gangs is the area? (I don't mind... like I said record...) I just want to know. Our other major concern is the costs. We are a big family and we can't afford to live in an expensive area. Nor a (hate the term) "ghetto" area. We want a more in between area, so to speak. They also have to allow pets... we have like what? Eight dogs? Three cats? and more!

Most/all of the towns north of Chicago along the lake are fairly expensive. There are other towns northwest of the city that are near smaller lakes and are considerably less expensive.
