Interesting post. I walk to work most times and the cold weather just makes me have to spit. I'll always try to do it in an alley or the street and not where someone will walk or see me doing it. I agree, it is disgusting, but if it's done discreetly, it's okay.

I chewed tobacco and dipped snuff for many years and always observed proper spit etiqutte----don't spit on walls, don't spit where people have to look at the splash, spit in the corners of floors, don't spit where people are gonna work or on the iron, when on gratings make sure you spit on the stringers and not through the grates and so forth.

Men like to spit and women like to stop men from spitting.

Thank you! I'm sooo glad to see I'm not the only one disgusted by this. Even if you have a respiratory problem or something else you can carry a little bag and discreetly spit into that. Carry a napkin. I wouldn't be surprised that the cities with the most H1N1 flu pateiens have the most public spitters. Isn't this how disease is transferred? Ugh.

I have chronic post-nasal drip and I don't spit in public. Only one time I ever did it that I can recall... I'd had some hot Thai curry just a couple hours earlier and got a sudden bout of acid reflux and it came up into my throat, taking me by surprise... and even then I made a point of walking over to a trash can and spitting into the can.

With as many people as I see spitting in public, I can't believe that all of them can't help it.

Okay...I'll create a hypothetical situation for you. Suppose you're waiting for the bus with another person and they begin hacking up in YOUR direction. Wouldn't that make want to punch the sh^$ out of them????

As a smoker, I do spit, and yes, sometimes on the sidewalk. I only spit on the sidewalk if I cannot get to the street conveniently.

No one should be fined for spitting!

Lol @ urination. I am a woman!

If you complain about spitting in public you probably belong somewhere more uptight. Try the OC.

I don't see the big deal. I've spent a fair deal of time in my life in Chicago among other places and people have always spit. I don't bend down and touch it or lick it, I'm not affected by it at all.

The BIG DEAL is that I consider it HIGHLY disrespectful to spit in my presence. Now if I were wearing thigh high hooker boots and soliticiting sex, then I'd understand spitting in my direction. I don't care if people spit as long as I have no idea they're doing it.

What if the person's sick? I always move away from spitters as if they had the plague. It's gross...bottomline.
