Hi all. I am contemplating moving to Chicago for work, however the job is in South Deering which I believe is south side Chicago. I am not too thrilled about living in any neighborhood in the south BUT I also don't want to drive an hour each day. Any suggestions? I really like the Lakeview area. BTW, I'm in my mid-30s and married w/o kids. We don't necessarily like to goto clubs or bars but do like to adventure eating at different restaurants. Looking for a 2 bedroom place in the $1100-1400 range. Any neighborhood suggestions?

That area in general is highly industrial, and represents an area of mainly "blue collar" workers, both black and white. Notably its also the location of Lake Calumet, and the areas main garbage dumps generally it is industrial. To be honest Lakeview would be one hell of a commute, on a good day it would probably run you an hour and on a bad day I wouldn't even want to speculate. If you are looking for a similar area that is less of a commute, I suggest Hyde Park a trendy south side community near the University of Chicago. Its relatively safe (other then you typical city crime), there are plenty of young people, educated people, restaurants and museums. Kenwood is also a possability, it is Barrack Obamas old neighborhood but it is still "up and coming" so it might not be the safest yet. If you don't mind suburban living Orland Park, Orland Hills and Tinley Park are viable alternatives.

Hyde Park is probably your best bet, but the South Loop might also be worth a look. It's less than 30 minutes driving (longer by transit). Other possibilities include Morgan Park/Beverly, the west side of Hammond, or Homewood.

If I lived near 94 in the north side (i.e. Roscoe Village, Logan Square), how long of a commute do you think it would be to South Deering in rush hour?

45 to 50 minutes by car. About 90 minutes by transit (depending on location).
