Brian was simply saying it depends on what you believe as to whether or not "killing" is a sin.

Killing is killing......there's no justifying it. OP, you may want to skip this conversation with your niece until she is old enough to understand the wickedness of mankind and that sin, greed and power are the cause of all of these wars. She won't understand that we have to defend ourselves sometimes and that killing is the result of that. This is a tough one for sure to try and explain to a 12 year old.

Ilene,

I agree that although there are times we do need to protect ourselves against invasion - there is no justification for killing

Romans 13 justifies it. There is nothing wrong with cops enforcing the law of the land.

How to you defend the nation against invasion if not by force?

It is not clear to me that when it says that the rulers bear the sword that it is not a figurative reference that the ruler is in charge of punishment that they deem necessary to inflict on those that do evil. Yes cops enforce the law, however they do not kill everyone that breaks the law.........

I did not finish the sentence I do not believe there is justification for killing outside of self defence

Romans 13 DOES NOT justify killing or murder. Nowhere in those scriptures does it say it's ok to kill someone. A show of force with a "sword" or a "gun" is for correction, not for killing!! It is a tool to keep criminals in line, not to go around willy-nilly killing them for acting up. And if there weren't guns, then the cops would have to be in better shape in order to "forcefully" keep people in line. I know, I know the cops have to have guns because the criminals have them....well then they need to do a better job of keeping guns out of criminals hands!!
