Delayed punishment? She lived how many years after that? 1000?
Not only did she die, but the whole human race died. Approximately 140,000 physically die everyday, and most are already dead spiritually. They go from one dead life to a worse one -- hell fire.
Those who dispute the holy scriptures are spewing the same talk that originated in the Garden of Eden. Did God really say that you must not partake in sin or you will face an eternal hell fire? The enemy whispers, God didn't really mean what He said. It's snake talk.
Wow, how you are adding to the scriptures ...
We(Christian Universalists) are not questioning if God means what he says, that is a straw-man argument. I could say the same of Et'ers. Christ said that he makes all things new, does Christ really mean what he says? Will he really make everything new? Everything? I believe he will ...
We do question if God means to say what the traditions of men, and the orthodox fundamentalists who subscribe to them, teach that he is saying.

The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.”
Eve's not even created yet... Adam didn't relay the info very well ... did he?
But look at what God says: "when you eat of it you will 'surely die'" the Hebrew for 'surely die' is "muth muth" or the literal translation: 'dying you die'
or killing you kill, causatively.
Could have meant many things... but in her understanding perhaps she thought she would drop dead that moment, after all it was Adam who would have told her about it, right? So the serpent was telling the truth. She did not die that day...
Either way, there is no eternal torment... simply death.
I notice, in your posts, the points you try to make death mean eternal torment. Where do you make that connection from scripture?

No they don't silly ... People only go to literal hell-fire in the wild fantasies of human imagination ...
Do you believe that Eve went to hell fire? And Adam too?
2 Corinthians 5:17 - Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
There's a condition, if any man be in Christ.
Note the condition is not permanent.... "behold, ALL things are become new"
Sounds like a statement of fact to me....
Same here: Rev. 21:5
All things are become new...
