There's a bit of a joke going around that I sometimes use for a signature: "Obama is not a brown-skinned, anti-war socialist who gives away free health care. You're thinking of Jesus."

Is there some truth to that? The more times I've read over the Sermon on the Mount and read how the earliest Christians lived in the Act of the Apostles (with God even killing two people who held back possessions from the commune), the more it strikes me that modern Christians in the US seem to have different, more conservative political values than Jesus likely approves of (though Christians in most other countries still believe in loving their neighbors as themselves, at least as an ideal).

Whenever I see in the news that Christians are doing things like supporting wars that aren't necessary for self defense, or that they're against universal healthcare, I wonder if they've read some other Bible than I have?

Can a person be both Christian and against universal health care or in favor of wars that are apparently only being fought to enhance the bottom line of "defense" contractor corporations?

Going past the political labels, Snuffy, can a person be Christian AND against universal healthcare, food, and shelter for the poor and disabled?

Can a true Christian be in favor of a war that isn't necessary to defend this country?

Jesus said first ``Give Caesar what is Caesars, and Give God what is Gods.``....... See Jesus could be a socialist and a lot of His ideas are socialist, but that socialist is Not a selfish one or proud one , or indifferent publicans bias one ... Jesus is for the parties that allow Christianity to flourish and the Party that Life is held up and People are feed and people have shelter and dignity and freedom for His ideas to come ...... Many People in America will object, but believe in the Republican is a gift of God and helping others is a bad thing because egalitarianism does not exist in America because of the communist threat from the past rejects the lazy people who abused the system in socialism ......

Nope. They'd have to choose between calling themselves Christian and acting like one, or accepting that their Christianity only extends as far as their self-titled label.

No. Jesus was not political.

His beliefs are feed the poor , yet also it is good to be diligent and manage money wisely. Work to eat and have a storehouse to feed those during famine. Help those in need.

Jesus also said to consider what you do. If you build a house make sure you have the ability to go through with your plans or you will not do well. The same as being a Christian.

Wanna cite chapter and verse for us on this one?

Again, I'd love to see what quote you're drawing this conclusion from. Jesus thinks we shouldn't default with citibank?

With more than 300 million people living in the U.S. alone, your bound to have differing beliefs on various topics from politics to universal healthcare to religion. You cannot pigeon people into one box. So your question to me - and I don't want to be rude so I apologize - is pretty much moot because we haven't met all the Christians in this country to say a blanket statement about what they individually believe.

There is empirical data that indicates the Republican wing of our political spectrum contains a greater percentage of its population who identify as Christians than the Democratic wing.

There have also been numerous surveys that indicate Christians/Republicans are more frequently in favor of ending entitlements and lowering taxes for the rich.

Do you dispute this?
