Sadly .....
  1. It did not glorify the name of Christ
  2. It gave mockers the opportunity to do what they do best
  3. It once again shows the purpose of Millennialism ... to predict the end of the world.
There are two types of millennialists..........
  1. the bold "but you ask for it" date setters
  2. and everyone else
The bold ones are easily refutable (notice today's date vs the prediction)
It's the other ones that are in the family of believers that cause many of us to shake our heads about.

Fact is, even if one isn't bold enough to produce a "rapture" date, the theory of millennialism is the practice of predicting the end of the world. Why...?
A: The Milleniumist's rapture occures (whenever)
+
B: The Milleniumist's 7 year trib ....... (whenever + 7)
+
C: The Milleniumist's 1000 year number....... ( whenever + 7 + 1000 number)
=
The predicted date of Jesus' return when "whenever" occures

Every milleniumist has multiple "days of the Lord"
  • The Bible has the singular ... "Day of the Lord"
Every milleniumist has multiple "raising from the dead" (unless people stop dying for 1000 years)........ the Bible refutes that:
Every milleniumist has believers meeting Christ prior to the last day... the Bible refutes that:
  • 1 Thessalonians 4 tells us that believers will rise to meet Christ in the air, not prior to, but on the last day
Every milleniumist has some people seeing Christ at one time then another time. ... The Bible refutes that:
  • Matthew 24:30, all the nations of the earth “will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory.” On that day, according to Revelation 1:7, “every eye will see him.”

While the millennium is yet future and literal, so is it clearly stated that we do not know when the good Lord will come.

We are to expect him at any moment. So we did learn that date-setting has once accomplished,
  1. It did not glorify the name of Christ
  2. It gave mockers the opportunity to do what they do best
and 3, it has potentially drawn people away from Christ and the Word of God. Bad idea. Stop setting dates folks! God will prove you wrong every time.

Amen....
All the predicting when the day will come..... it is sad and such a shame as even our Lord Jesus didn't even know the hour.....

Let us keep our eyes on the finisher of our faith our Lord Jesus Christ, where everything is perfected in holiness, making us blameless, spotless in Him preparing us for our eternal life, home with the Father....

Keep looking forward, enduring, praying and doing the work of evangelist in our Lord Jesus Christ.... sharing His truth and love with a world lost in the darkness of sin !!

For we know that the Father's grace reigns on the just and unjust and is longsuffering so that many will come to repentance and not perish !!

Amen

That we should pray for others to get wisdom and be gentle in the meantime.

Well, first off, the predicting of a date is really an act of hubris. God told us that no one would know the date and time, and Christ gave us the parable of the bridesmaids to reinforce the point.

Second, with all this obsession with eschatology, are you shedding a negative light on our motivation for trying to be Christlike? Is the message, "Okay, time to clean up your act" rather than a discussion of God's love? According to Christ, the first and most important commandment is to love God, not be fearful of him. In fact, if you got out a concordance, you would realize that God's most common command to us is, "Do not be afraid." Yet, all these end-of-the-world doomers are trying to use fear to bring people to God. I'm not sure that is what He has in mind.

Do all millennialists have to (logically) believe a pre-trib rapture? I don't believe in a pre-trib rapture but have no problem with a literal millennial reign. Not that I have given my eschatology much thought... (other than the pre trib rapture bit).

Thanks for your thoughts.

Not at all.

This was about gently reminding my milleniumist friends here that such teaching is not Biblical.... that the other OP is the result which comes from accepting the concept of milleniumism.

So what if one doesn't go so far as to prophecy an exact date, Milleniumsim still does in theory.
  • When the body of Christ has been completed, the church-age will terminate (pick the date)
    • +
  • then the last remaining seven years
    • +
  • the Millennial kingdom of Christ (1000 yrs)
    • = The date of the end of the world

I disagree that the fear of judgment is not what God wants us to be mindful of... I think Jesus puts fear into perspective here:

26 "So have no fear of them, for nothing is covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known.
27 What I tell you in the dark, say in the light, and what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops.
28 And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

And John explains how we can avoid living in constant fear of judgment here:

17 By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world.
18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.

Date setting is ridiculous and unbiblical, but we should not dismiss fear out of hand as a motivator to avoid falling into sin. 1 Peter 1:17 As we are conformed into Christ's image, his love is perfected in us and we have no need of fear, only confidence!

This is how I understand it .

One thing about date setting is that you can be sure that any date set is wrong because Jesus said no man knows the hour or the day. If any predicted date turned out to be right then Jesus would be wrong.
