I don't think it would really be a doctrine at all. I know it's not needed to obtain the LDS salvation/exaltation, etc. I think it was just more of an attempt for the early leaders to show they knew something all other churches did not. I am sure there was much excitement when Joseph purchased the papyri. Who knew at that time we would be able to read what they really said one day and it would be so accessible.
