I've been keeping up with the Pope for the past 2 years. I faithfully watch his Angelus/Regina Coeli prayer every Sunday. He is in steep physical decline and it's obvious. The incrediable weight loss, he's increasingly slow movements, the droggyness in his voice. I honestly think this is the best decision. I love this Pope.I love him more than our previous pope, but I do feel like his days are numbered closer than we all think and he feels it. Just look at Steve Jobs.
The significance of this resignation is that it was apparently prophecied by St Malachy the first Irish Pope back in 1139 AD. Malacky also supposedly had this vision when visiting Rome and named all the future Popes by and 111 being Benedict XVI. Benedict would resign and 112 (yet to be announced) will be the last Pope. It's essentially a prophecy that needs to be evaluated, but interesting none-the-less.

Didn't he prophecy that this new Pope will be "Peter of Rome"? It will be interesting to see if this prediction plays out.
a lot of people are doubting it's just because of his health..he has help in everything, it's not like he has to cook and clean or do mass everyday, he has no strenuous chores to do..the fact he can't travel is not a reason to stop poping around...we may never be told the real reason. The catholic church is an expert in sweeping things under the rug, so I don't think I'll ever accept what they try to feed us all.

Well I have mentioned in several threads, in several forums and yes even some Facebook pages we who are in the progressive wing of the Church pray for another John XXIII or as he was called the "good pope, the pope that loved people more than power".
He called for Vatican II , he said he was opening a window to let fresh air into the Church, he said the Church was not meant to be a museum piece, that the Gospels had not changed but our understanding of them has.
The link below is a list of changes young Catholics would like to see, as an old Catholic I must say my hope is the same.
I am not Catholic, but one side of my family is. I asked a couple cousins and nieces and they said the Pope's resignation probably would not effect any of them, and they actually thought he made a wise decision. They all said in one way or the other they would like to see a younger pope because they hope for some changes in the way they handle misconduct among their clergymen, and a few other problems within the church. The cousins were around my age (old) and the nieces were from early twenties to mid forties.
