Perhaps, it's because they fear death itself?
Not because they believe God is striking them dead.

When a person’s understanding becomes driven by hate, fear or extreme negative consequences.
There is no benefit, rather it’s an "I win, you lose" mentality.

Which is nothing less than "cruel and unusual" punishment.
