Jesus said; "If the son frees you, you shall truly be free."
There are two different views you can take on this verse. The first which Mainstream Christianity takes is that if you believe that Jesus died for the sins of the world and for you and you repent this is how the son frees you.
Another view is that if you become the son, which is the servant of God ,and do the works of God as Jesus did this will free you.
What scripture can you think of where Jesus taught that His followers become Him?
I don't think it's that we become the Son, but we acknowledge that He dwells in us, and is one with us - which is what Jesus prayed for to the Father in John 17.

I think most Christians cannot get away from the thought that Jesus is to far above them because of the miracles and the resurrection. But if you look at what He taught it shows He wants us to be the same kind of servant of God He was. Why would He have sent His followers as He was sent with the same words that were given to Him and tell them to keep the same commandments that were given to Him and teach others to do everything He commanded them?

I agree in principle... I just took issue with the wording in the OP about "becoming Him".

There are no verses where Jesus taught His followers become Him.
But here is more on your main verse. These verse come before it:
Joh 8:31 Jesus, then, said to the Jews who have believed Him, "If ever you should be remaining in My word, you are truly My disciples,
Joh 8:32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will be making you free."
Paul did tell believers of the nations that they are "in Christ." Of course this metaphorically speaking. God considers us as, in a way, being in Christ. Christ's righteousness is our righteousness. His holiness, ours, etc.
I can only speak from my own experience but when I became a believer I became free. The worries of the unknown were gone. The stress of how to raise my kids was gone. This song comes to mind: Free to be me. The weight of the world is lifted. It doesn't matter how anyone else sees me. My Father in Heaven loves me, there's no one in the world he loves more than he loves me (and you). It's amazing...indeed.
