Yes, I like Dion. Runaround Sue is one of the greatest songs of all time. With it, he proved you can make a rollicking good rock n' roll record without a lot of instrumentation. That song cooks because of the simple combination of voice and hand-claps for percussion.

Not interested in his proselytizing, though.

But others may want to hear him so let's not stop them.

Here are some comments from Dion about his Catholicism.

(I prefer his early music also.)

That was a good article. The reason he wasn't on the plane that crashed was he didn't want to pay the price, which he thought was too high, so he let the other man go in his place.

Many think it was because of a flip of a coin but that is wrong.

I like Dion. He is one of my favorites from the Oldies era. One very interesting fact about Dion and The Belmonts is they were the fourth act that was touring with Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and the Big Bopper in Clear Lake, IA, on the Winter Dance Party concert tour. There was only room for three of the acts on the privately charted plane and they all drew straws to see who would drive to Fargo, ND. Dion and his Belmonts lost the draw which consequently saved their lives.

The plane crash referred to as "The Day The Music Died" (Feb. 3rd 1959) caused a major upset in the Winter Dance Party concert tour with the three headlining acts dead. A virtually unknown 15-year-old kid, living in Fargo, ND at the time was trying desperately to break into show business. When he heard the news, he quickly assembled a rag-tag group of school kids and volunteered to fill in while waiting for Dion and The Belmonts to arrive in Moorehead, MN.

The group called themselves the Shadows, and were a big success. That 15-year-old kid who sang lead with the Shadows went on to become Bobby Vee.

Your post got me curious because in the biographical films I've watch: The Buddy Holly Story, and La Bamba, that showed them drawing lots.

After doing a little more research you are correct, but there was also a coin toss involved. The coin toss was between Richie Valens and musician Tommy Allsup. Allsup lost the toss and Valens took his seat on the plane.

From doing this research I also found out another yet-to-be-famous musician was touring with the group: Waylon Jennings. Waylon Jennings had a seat on the plane, but Richardson (The Big Bopper) had contracted the flu from riding around in the cold tour bus. Richardson asked Jennings to trade seats with him in hopes of having more time to recuperate before the next performance.

When Holly, who had chartered the plane, learned that Jennings was not going to fly, he said in jest, "Well, I hope your ol' bus freezes up." Jennings responded, "Well, I hope your ol' plane crashes," a humorous but ill-fated response that haunted Jennings for the rest of his life.
