From Christians on the Left

Quote:
We all hear of the uber-crazy stuff that high-profile fundamentalists Christians say. Stupid Christian quotes are gleefully reported by the liberal media, and rightly so. For those of us who are SANE Christians, it’s a reminder of the reasons that non-believers think all Christians are crazy. As a member of the Christian Left, I say “let’s expose these kooks”! Here are some quotes by fundamentalist Christians that you may not have heard. Y’all enjoy.

“When the temptation to masturbate is strong, yell “Stop!” to those thoughts as loudly as you can in your mind. Then recite a portion of the Bible or sing a hymn.” –Mormon Guide to Self-Control

“We don’t have to protect the environment, the Second Coming is at hand.” –James Watt, Secretary of the Interior during the Reagan years.

“I called to buy some meth, but I threw it away.” —Rev. Ted Haggard, when details began to emerge about his visits to a male prostitute, in 2006.

“Our culture is superior. Our culture is superior because our religion is Christianity and that is the truth that makes men free.” –Pat Buchanan

“This Christmas I want you to do the most loving thing and I want you to buy each of your children an SKS rifle and 500 rounds of ammunition.” —A speaker at the 1995 convention of the U.S. Taxpayers Party. A few months later, Dobson endorsed their candidate for president, Howard Phillips.

“Kids today are looking for something to die for… If you give them something to die for, they’ll go to the edge of the earth for you.” —James Dobson’s son Ryan, in 2005. His book, 2Die4 : The Dangerous Truth About Following Christ advocates “murderous war because our enemies are deadly.”

“The right of holding slaves is clearly established in the Holy Scriptures, both by precept and example.” –R. Furman, Baptist, of South Carolina

“Sex education classes in our public schools are promoting incest.” –Jimmy Swaggart

“Nobody has the right to worship on this planet any other God than Jehovah. And therefore the state does not have the responsibility to defend anybody’s pseudo-right to worship an idol.” –Rev. Joseph Morecraft, Chalcedon Presbyterian Church, “Biblical Role of Civil Government” speech given 8/31/93 at Biblical Worldview and Christian Education Conference

“When you know the LORD you have no need for masturbation.”
–Brice Wellington

What James Watt really said.

"That is the delicate balance the Secretary of the Interior must have: to be steward for the natural resources for this generation as well as future generations. I do not know how many future generations we can count on before the Lord returns; whatever it is we have to manage with a skill to leave the resources needed for future generations."
Testimony before the House Interior Committee (5 February 1981)

James G. Watt - Wikiquote

In my experience when quotes that make someone look like an idiot are provided by someone who would like to make the party of the first part look like an idiot but without providing a source for the quote, one is well advised to be suspicious. This is true regardless of whether the parties are left/right, east/west or red, green or blue. Make what you want of the actual quote but it is what he really said.

Eight of those 10 quotes are directly attributed to a named individual. Which ones are you claiming are not Christians? How did you know they weren't Christian?

VizVision. The ability to determine if someone you do not know and will never meet is a Christian or not. Looks like Pat Buchanan didn't pass muster. Which would probably come as a big shock to Buchanan..... and possibly God.

How about those lovely people at Westboro Baptist? Would their particular missives count?

Planes crash God laughs
God hates ****
God hates you

More recently-
God hates Oklahoma
May all the vets fighting in hopeless wars burn in eternal damnation

Good Christians all.

From the OP:

“Kids today are looking for something to die for… If you give them something to die for, they’ll go to the edge of the earth for you.” —James Dobson’s son Ryan, in 2005. His book, 2Die4 : The Dangerous Truth About Following Christ advocates “murderous war because our enemies are deadly.”

So what kind of “murderous war” is Ryan Dobson allegedly advocating? Go kill some Muslims, blow up abortion clinics, maybe?

Actually he is not advocating anything at all in this quote. This is now he describes the Christian life, fighting against the temptation of Satan and the world. Dobson is writing to a young audience looking for the next thrill with “all the subtlety of a two-by-four to the side of the head” as the review below put it.

Quote:
[Dobson] trumpets Christianity as the ultimate adrenaline rush: "You and I were born for excitement and adventure.... Anything else leaves us bored." Christ alone offers the abundant life to all who follow him, but the way is fraught with peril and temptation from Satan and his "evil world system"; Dobson dubs it "murderous war because our enemy is deadly." Furthermore, Christ calls his followers to die daily to their own desires so that they might live more fully for him

Nonfiction Book Review: 2DIE4: The Dangerous Truth About Following Christ by Ryan Dobson, Author, Brian Smith, With with Brian Smith. Multnomah $10.99 (140p) ISBN 978-1-59052-384-1
The redirection of the meaning of this quote, the impression given that the slavery quote was from the present day, and the invented quote from James Watt, all give me the idea that maybe the Liberal America site is less than fully honest. (Ya think?) But that is hardly anything new. The Us versus Them mentality is so strong these days that anything and everything - real or not, accurate or not, honest or not - that makes 'Them' look bad is fair game.
