Francis' papacy has attempted to re-focus the church's attention on what we have in common, rather than what divides us. A post-Francis conservative would be a step backwards.
If the church wishes to grow, it needs to demonstrate inclusiveness. Open arms demonstrate welcome more than words.
Would Jesus be acceptable? The ultimate liberal, strange how so many of His followers all want conservatism when he was about as liberal as governments are corrupt...
traditionally the pope has served for life BUT they do not have to and the previous pope Benedict (now "pope emeritus") obviously did resign (according to the "papal resignation" entry in Wikipedia 5 popes have done so in the history of the Church). don't think there is any official Church law or cannon that explicitly requires the Pope to serve a "life term", LOL.
concerning the "he or SHE" reference above, am guessing that this is about the so-called "pope Joan" which FWIW, the relevant Wikipedia article says is "...now widely accepted to be FICTIONAL."

Reason: more info.
We will never return to the small self centered Papacy. Once a Pope proves they really like other human beings, and get beyond those silly red shoes ,the giant ring, and decorative clothing, it is hard to go back.
I think he is very conscious of the fact he just could be assassinated.
