well it could happen. for example, pope John Paul 2 in may, 1981 was indeed shot and seriously hurt in an attempted assassination by a mentally disturbed man from Turkey (who I believe the pope eventually visited in prison and forgave).

I think he's been good for the Church. He has challenged us to focus more on Christ's love and living that out, as opposed to tradition. He is a true Jesuit in his style and approach. It has made some in the Church uncomfortable at times, but that can be a good thing. All of the Popes help shape the Catholic Church in their own way, and he has definitely left his mark regardless of when he leaves.
I think he is very conscious of the fact he just could be assassinated.
Which would be a great loss. This is the first pope I have ever been drawn to - I really like him a lot. If he steps down or 'God forbid" is assassinated it would be really awful for a very large number of people to witness such a loss.

I like him a lot too. Between Pope Paul and John Paul II there was a pope who took the name John Paul. Sadly, he died after a mere 33 days as Pope. In the short time he was pope, John Paul became known as the Smiling Pope. Francis reminds me of John Paul. Same personalities, disposition, and aura of kindness and humility.
