"Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise."
Some people are prone, when looking at themselves (and/or at others), to seeing sin and ugliness. Apply the passage above to yourself and others, and make a point of seeking out and focusing on the good, the "spirit of God", within each of us.

Why would we read that to suggest that we think of ourselves as good?

Very true. Many of us have forgotten who we are never mind what we look like. James 1:24. How can you know what you look like if you don't know who you are ?.

Seeing good in yourself and others is cool, but that's not what the verse is referring to.
Perhaps reread the op, Viz, and you will see it in the way it was intended.
In the context, Paul is not suggesting we look at the Spirit inside us. It's not intended as a mystical passage of contemplation. He's saying to focus on Godly things -- to not focus on things that will lead us astray.

I would suggest you re-read the chapter.
What do you think is the source of godliness, Viz, if not the spirit of God within?
See in others as you would have them see in you. Now this is a noble lovely thought to contemplate on until it becomes a place where you see and think from .
