Our neighbor kids dress up like saints on Halloween. After all that is it's origin. To remember the saints.
Don't overthink this. Halloween is a time for kids to go door to door to get candy. THAT IS ALL! It doesn't matter how they are dressed. They can be a devil, Charles Manson, Peyton Manning, Pee Wee Herman, or Pope Francis. It doesn't matter.
In my small town my kids dressed up. They're junior high and high school now, so they're a bit old, but when they were younger, they went door to door. To not do so was considered snobbish. There is nothing dark or sinister about it -- everyone loves to see the kids in their costumes.
No, that's not the origin of Samhain. That's the "origin" of the church usurping a pagan holiday.
Right!
I happen to LOVE Halloween! My church has a Halloween party that is open to kids from the neighborhood. We have it a few days before Halloween so they can trick or treat.
Actually I did read the article, but Catholic Answers isn't my go-to source for anthropological information.
