Spare the rod, spoil the child is often used to justify beating of children. However...

Rods can also be used as a walking stick, to lead one to the right path.

What are some other phrases either misquoted or taken waaaaaaaaaaaay out of context?

Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy all that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys.'"

Deuteronomy 21:18-21Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

18 `When a man hath a son apostatizing and rebellious -- he is not hearkening to the voice of his father, and to the voice of his mother, and they have chastised him, and he doth not hearken unto them --
19 then laid hold on him have his father and his mother, and they have brought him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his place,
20 and have said unto the elders of his city, Our son -- this one -- is apostatizing and rebellious; he is not hearkening to our voice -- a glutton and drunkard;
21 and all the men of his city have stoned him with stones, and he hath died, and thou hast put away the evil out of thy midst, and all Israel do hear and fear.

THE TRUTH ABOUT SPARE THE ROD AND SPOIL THE CHILD

Beating? ... No.

Disciplining? ... Yes.

There is no misquote here.

Proverbs 23:13 - Do not hold back discipline from the child, Although you strike him with the rod, he will not die.

Genesis 3:16

To the woman he said, “I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.”

Some people grab onto that and try to make it sound as if God decreed that the man is supposed to rule over the woman.

Some improperly believe that 2 Corinthians 5:8 teaches "sudden death sudden glory."

2Co 5:8 yet we are encouraged, and are delighting rather to be away from home out of the body
and to be at home with the Lord."

They often misstate the above verse.

Hmm...Well, for those who keep 'disciplining' their kids with a rod and we'll keep 'disciplining' them by calling social services
