It's been my experience that very little in modern "church culture" appeals to men.

It's the same phenomenon in Catholic churches that try to be "up to date" and contemporary in their worship style.

In the Catholic world, I've noticed that in the more traditional communities (i.e. ones that do the old pre-1968 Latin mass) there are tons of men; not just fathers with families but single men too.

GSPNative, IMO, Yes you should take it as a compliment.

Was he also there by himself, or was he with wife/girlfriend?

If he was also by himself maybe it was just his way of saying "Hey, wow, it's great to see another guy here (like me) that actually wants to be here, because it seems like a lot of guys only come because their wives make them".
