Florence Nightingale was born into a wealthy family and was expected to stay out of a public working roll and to become a married woman inside a home. When she wanted to go into nursing her family strongly discouraged it to the point of threatening ostracization. However, she heard a voice from God telling her to do it so she did.

She went on as a very devout Christian to becoming one of the most famous nurses in history, helping the wounded in the Crimean War, professionalizing the nursing industry, willing to help sick prostitutes that were abandoned by other medical professionals, etc.

Although a devout Christian, she saw value in other religions' teachings.

She sets an example for us today in so many ways.

Though I knew the name I never really knew anything about Florence Nightingale. I read the Wikipedia article on her. She had a calling and she answered it magnificently.

Yes, Florence Nightingale is considered the founder of nursing as a profession, and is regarded as "the Mother of Modern Nursing". Her commitment to health and social justice for all is still taught in today's nurse education programs.

Anyone who studied the Buddhist and Hindu scriptures would see that they are profound. In some cases, they express Christian concepts more clearly than do the Christian scriptures. It isn't really part of Christian theology that the Holy Spirit is totally absent from or incapable of operating in other religions. Christian exclusivity doesn't require that all other religions be regarded as completely worthless or demonic.
