" Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God." Colossians 3.16
I'll just say that if the sermon is that much more important than the hymns, you may wish to reconsider which hymns your are picking. While offering the opportunity to praise God, hymns also teach and reinforce important biblical truths.
Music speaks to the same part of us where we hear God's voice, as do all of the arts. It has the power to shift our emotions, to change our mood, and to make us feel as though we are part of something greater and larger than ourselves.
Why do we sing in church ? What is the purpose of singing hymnals ? Why not just go right into the service without singing as the sermon is more important ? Who should our focus be on when we sing? Should we sing even if we don't have a good singing voice or we just don't like to sing period ?
Because we are human.
That being said, I find most church hymns these days pretty banal. There are a few gems, but all the best hymns are in Latin.
