I'll just say that if the sermon is that much more important than the hymns, you may wish to reconsider which hymns your are picking. While offering the opportunity to praise God, hymns also teach and reinforce important biblical truths.

In the first three gospels, the account of the last supper concludes with Jesus and the disciples singing a hymm. I wish I knew what it was.

It doesn't say you have to be able to carry a tune.
I let it rip in my car

For me beautiful music puts me in a worshipful mood and ready to hear God's word.

Music speaks to the same part of us where we hear God's voice, as do all of the arts. It has the power to shift our emotions, to change our mood, and to make us feel as though we are part of something greater and larger than ourselves.

Because we are human.

That being said, I find most church hymns these days pretty banal. There are a few gems, but all the best hymns are in Latin.
