I too love my LDS friends, really ( had a wonderful 3 hour conversation with an elder 2 summers ago within the temple grounds in salt lake city. He is a wonderful man ), and if anyone can come up with a short and simple answer, go for it.
I expressed a simple answer eaqrlier ( I think
) on this thread, but I'll try another one.
The soul is our own individual uniquely human gift from God.
The spirit is uniquely God ( or for non-trinitarians ) uniquely
of God.
The game plan, is to infuse our soul (or have our soul infused ) with the Spirit ( or again for the non-trinitarians ) the Spirit of God.
You asked and I tried. But I can't really defend it. It's too simple.
