Chrysler Group said today it does not intend to honor a request from the
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to recall as many as 2.7 million
Jeep Grand Cherokee and Liberty SUVs. NHTSA said a recall is needed to address
safety problems with the vehicles' fuel systems.

Chrysler said it had received a letter from NHTSA proposing a recall of
1993-2004 Grand Cherokee and 2002-07 Liberty vehicles, which the agency says
have defective fuel systems that pose an unreasonable risk to safety in
rear-impact collisions.

Sheesh, they are already in the middle of another recall regarding the airbag modules for these same years of cars. I still need to take mine in for service.

Chrysler's whitepaper, linked in the article, makes a pretty good case. Most of the examples of these failures have been really high velocity rear impacts, like a 65 MPH semi rear-ending a stationary GC. Neither vehicle is highly ranked for these kind of problems in testing.

Soetimes I think these recalls tend to get on the ridiculous side, with potential for problems being so slight that it's comical to actually issue a recall for it.

Its not the tank location, its the fact that people dont see them burnt out brake lights and nail them at freeway speeds

I could spend some time looking for all the Toyota and Honda recalls over the last few years, but I'll leave that for you to do, or not.

Ignorance is bliss.

Although, to be fair you're probably still better of with a Honda/Toyota than a Chrysler product. I like their vehicles... really like the Charger/300 and GC. Excepting reliability concerns, they'd be my picks for family car or SUV.
