Thanks everyone - great tips! We will plan on leaving very early tomorrow morning - that is of course if the kids and hubby co-operate:-). Hopefully will miss the peak rush.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone...

Sorry, but where are you driving from? You are going to Bay City, Michigan, right?

An option you might want to consider when you get into northern OH. If you take the 475/23 loop around to the west of Toledo when you get to Perrysburg, and then take 23 where it splits at NW Toledo, you would bypass Toledo AND Detroit, thus avoiding traffic, rush hour or otherwise, in both locations. You also would avoid any traffic for Detroit Metro Airport. If I remember correctly, 23 is at least 4 lane expressway all the way up and rejoins 75 around Flint.

Just for clarification - I-75 (through Toledo/Detroit) doesn't go close to Metro airport. I-94 does.

US 23 from 475 (Toledo) is two lanes, not four. And North of Ann Arbor (by Brighton) it gets REALLY backed up. But yes, you can take that North and eventually hook back into I-75.

OP is probably already on the road -- hope your trip is a good one.

I went up to MI yesterday afternoon, and back down here this morning -- traffic yesterday was AWFUL (random stop and go from Troy to Beaverdam) with what seemed to be a really high # of semis on the road. Maybe they're getting their stuff delivered ahead of time so they can take the holiday off??

Not too many speed traps (as of this morning). From previous years experience, there are usually a high number of troopers along 75 for the holiday traffic.

Be careful and safe everyone!!

Briolat21, the large number of semis you saw were probably caused by retailers wanting to stuff their storerooms for the holidays as well as drivers trying to get home for Turkey-Day. Could also be Canadians headed home because many of their customers "South of the Border" are closed for the holidays.

Happy Thanksgiving to you All!

I am aware that it is I-94 and not 75 that goes right past Detroit Metro, but I got caught in some traffic at 275 which is close to the airport. That would be the route that people from around Toledo would be taking to get to the airport for their flights.

I will still stick by my recommendation to take US 23 from the 475/23 junction at Perrysburg. US 23 IS a 4+ lane freeway in Michigan. I have driven it many times taking my mother to medical appointments in Ann Arbor. ( I also verified this on the 2010 Official Michigan Highway Map -- MDOT - PDF version) Traffic was moving right along every time I drove it. Also, US 23 is nearly a straight shot north from Perrysburg to Flint where it merges with 75. If you follow I-75 through Toledo and Detroit, you are going to angle east and then back west again. According to Mapquest, the travel time from Cincy to Bay City following 23 is 5 hrs - 37 minutes, Following the I-75 route, travel time is 6 hrs - 15 minutes.

Anyhow to the OP, I hope you have safe travels and a very enjoyable holiday.
