I will be moving to Cincinnati in a week or two from Iowa City and I am looking for a place to live. My finance and I would like to find a part of town that has a similar feel to Iowa City. We like having plenty of parks and walking/ bike trails, and being able to walk to a down town area with local restaurants and shops. I will be working downtown a few blocks from the baseball stadium and could deal with a commute of 30-45 min. We are looking for a 2-3 bedroom apartment or townhouse to rent for less than $1,200 a month. Thanks for any help.

If I'm not mistaken, Iowa City is kinda like a big college town, isn't it? Probably the closest thing to that you would find in the Cincinnati region is Oxford, which has a nice state park close to it. But it's a long commute to downtown Cincinnati. Have you thought about downtown itself? I think there are a lot of parks along the city's riverfront, and some townhouses or condos along the Riverside Drive area, as well as in Mt. Adams. I've heard the Banks is going to be a popular place, with a brand new park being built next to it along the river.

Oxford is WAY too far of a commute and I can't imagine living there unless you actually go to Miami University. Gaslight Clifton has every thing you are looking for (parks, library, bars, great restaurants, grocer, coffee shops, theater, stores, etc.) all within walking distance from most residents. Me and several of my friends currently live in the neighborhood and we all love it. It sounds like you are a young, educated couple. There are a lot of people like you in the neighborhood, so making friends shouldn't be hard. It's also very safe and extremely close to downtown (<10 min drive during rush hour). Just search Gaslight Clifton in Cincinnati craigslist and you will find some really great apartments for <1200. Also try driving/walking around and calling numbers on the "For Rent" signs, because not every landlord puts them up on the internet. Try getting a place close to the shops on Ludlow Ave.

Some other possibilities include Hyde Park, Oakley, O'bryonville, Mt. Lookout, Bellevue, Ky, and Pleasant Ridge.

Yes I agree Oxford would be a longer commute than Colhawkeye indicated in his post. I wasn't really suggesting it. Just thinking outloud about the similarities of both towns. You're right, Flourescent, Gaslight Clifton is a good call. I didn't think about that. I was reading the part of his post that said "being able to walk to a downtown area" so that's why I suggested places near downtown Cincinnati. I maybe misunderstood what they meant by a downtown area.

I'm familiar with Iowa City and have been there several times. My suggestion would be to consider Clifton Gaslight, Hyde Park, Mount Lookout or Mount Washington - the latter two the best for parks. And if you can hold off a few months for an apartment, The Banks downtown will be very similar to what you're liking from Iowa City.

Nice to see another Iowa native, I'm from Davenport. So I know how you feel, first off if you want a place that is easy to get around but still have the college feel to it, it would defiantly be in Highland Hieghts area. This is where Northern Kentucky University is and has almost everything you need, minus the heavy traffic, reminds me of Iowa City a lot. Over in Kentucky you'll see a lot cheaper places for rent without the crime than in Ohio and other places in Cincinnati. Hope this helps and Welcome!!

GO HAWKEYES!!

My only look at Iowa City has been on GOOGLE EARTH, but it appears to be very pleasant, but relatively flat city incorporating not only the state capitol, but also a large, strung-out university, right? In other words, an ideal city for biking and hiking. Cincinnati is very different -- large, hilly, and dense. Its huge university (UC) is both urban and compact. Northern Kentucky, equally urban, is even more hilly -- not exactly ideal biking country. Nevertheless, I'm confident that recommendations already made will provide you and your fiance with something, at least until you get your bearings. I might add that Cincy's a big, beautiful town -- but it ain't Iowa, heh heh1

Don't start with the bashing Ohio posts. You clearly don't sound like you know anything about the Ohio side. I have read all of your posts that you have posted in the Ohio section. There is a lot more going on on the Ohio side of the border.

If you want the true urban feel, Cincinnati has some awesome neighborhoods to look into. You will have quick and easy access to restaurants, great parks, and you won't be far from downtown at all.

Huh?

Des Moines is the capital of Iowa, not Iowa City.

I think it's interesting there is a town in Iowa named Cincinnati.
