Well, if you're not going to believe the reasons given by the Enquirer itself for the change, I don't know what to tell ya.

It doesn't matter really. The new format is what it is and the old way isn't coming back.

I'd be willing to bet that some kind of money changed hands when Gannett decided to go to the Facebook commenting. Whatever happened, it's well documented that they did try the change in a couple test markets first and the volume of comments dropped to a small fraction of what it had been. So they had to know that would be at least one effect of the changeover to Facebook. And they obviously considered that a positive. On balance.

Fewer people correcting their egregious and/or careless errors. Yeah, the Enquirer would consider that a bonus.

I really miss the neighborhood forums they sponsored. The one for Mason was mainly Masonites ragging about our own town, city council, school board, etc. There was very little outside interference. I miss that a lot. People definitely spoke their mind and I believe that was good. And on those forums at least I disagree with the anonymity. Those of us who participated regularly pretty well could peg who everyone was.

700 WLW this morning reported that cincinnati.com was going to become a (mostly) pay site within a few months. According to the story, they expect you will get one or two free articles per month, but that's it.

So long Enquirer. It was nice to know you.

That seems to be a trend; many papers from the New York Times to the Erie Times-News allow access to 10 or so free articles a month. Some restrict access to all articles; some to just "choice" content. Others restrict access to forums and comments unless you're a subscriber.

Here's the link to the Enquirer's story:

Wonder how much it will cost ...

Cincinnati.com to have paywall | Cincinnati.com | cincinnati.com

What I wonder about is whether the Enquirer will be smarter about the construction of their paywall than the NY Times has been.

How To Hack the New York Times Paywall

Another one bites it. City Beat was acquired by a firm based in Nashville. Soon the only place to get Cincinnati-based reporting is going to be over your back yard fence.
