My daughter has one of these small netbook computers (a model 1005ha) which does not power on, and asked me to troubleshoot. Being somewhat limited technologically, I'd like to find a compatible battery and power cord to test whether the problem might be there or might be a blown motherboard. If there's another eeePC owner who would meet me somewhere to try their good components on this dead machine, I'd be very grateful.

There's some kind of battery based company in Cincinnati that might check for you. I know nothing about it except a friend took one of my computers in to do that.

The charger accessory pack is all of $7 on Amazon. Hardly worth the gas money for someone to meet you. Why not just buy it and see. Even if the battery is dead, it will power on when plugged in.

Finally, you can get one in working condition on Ebay for $25-50 so I would not want to be spending too much time on this one.

I was trying to identify an issue without buying new equipment, of whatever price, before knowing what is broken. The world does not need any more duplications.

On balance, I think that the planet will be better served by you buying a charger for that computer than two people taking time from their other activities and driving around trying to meet up, charge the thing, and then see if it is working, return the charger to the owner, and then buy your own, plus a battery which it will no doubt need, which is the consequence of what you suggested. On reflection, perhaps drop it off to the HamCo computer recycling center.

In the past I've belonged to computer clubs and auto clubs whose members cooperate in this manner. Somewhat like sharing a lawnmower with your neighbor. FYI the main diagnosis would be not whether the charger works, but whether the MB is blown which is a much larger problem.
