I'll be moving to Cincinnati in April along with my husband, 4 month old baby, and our 2 dogs. We are relocating from LA and Mt. Adams looks like a really nice neighborhood for us - walkable, close to parks, things to do, etc. However I've heard it has sort of a party atmosphere. Now that we are in our 30s and have a baby we're looking for a place that we can feel safe/not hear drunk people livin it up in the middle of the night. Should we consider another neighborhood instead or do you think we'd still fit in there?

Hey, welcome to Cincinnati!

Mt. Adams in vibe, atmosphere, etc. is very akin to San Francisco - or so I've heard (never been to San Francisco). Both demographically and from a topography perspective.

Offhand I'm crunched for time and just saw your post, so I would say look at Hyde Park some.

Also, there's a sticky thread at the top of this forum, and if you could answer those questions that would help us out a lot to narrow down neighborhoods for you.

Good luck!

My Adams was the big party spot, but most of that rowdiness has moved to Over-the-Rhine. The bars that are left up there are still popular and sometimes get packed, but you won't be dealing with drunken craziness on the streets regularly.

For an early 30s with a young kid, why in the world would you consider Mt Adams. Mt Adams in MHOP is for young people who are trying to figure out where their future life is.

You will want to live in Hyde Park or Mt. Lookout. Study up and ask questions.

For your convenience, here's a link to the thread:

Also, I'm going to go against the majority here and say that Mt. Adams could work for you, but it depends entirely on the type of lifestyle and atmosphere you want for your family.

Families do live there, but if you can't tell from the responses, it's not known as a family-centric atmosphere. Doesn't mean it should be crossed off the list though, nor does it mean that it should be the only place to look.

Answering the questions will help us out a lot to figure out a list of properties and locations you may like.

Coming from San Fran, doubt if you would like the flat land out where I live in the north. But the best advice has already been given - Hyde Park or Mt Lookout. Keep looking until you find a place on the hills with a river view, you will adore it. But Mt Adams, forget it for a family. In another thread I noted someone asking about Hipsters, a term I had not heard for a long time. If you consider yourselves Hipsters maybe Mt Adams would be OK, but believe me Hyde Park or Mt Lookout will be much better.

I lived in Mt. Adams for a while. Contrary to what many people think, there's a significant older population there as well. I used to see plenty of new families and, in the nicest of homes, retirees.

Backing this up as well. The area of Mt. Adams with all of the bars will still get rowdy randomly (mostly college date parties now) but the action has really moved downtown/OTR.

Everyone i know that lives in Mt. Adams is gay or divorced. And retirement age. And, the nightly visitors still urinate on your stoop. There are less of them, true, but they are just as drunk. And, 2 car on premises covered parking for a house in Mt. Adams adds about $500,000 to the cost. Seriously.

Don't fool around. Just move to Hyde Park or Mt. Lookout.

long-distance moves are complicated and logistical nightmares. you have my sympathy and well-wishes.

Will you have an opportunity to visit before making the move? Will you be initially be renting?

There are a lot of different neighborhoods that might work depending on your specific needs. To answer your question directly, Mt. Adams the kind of neighborhood that I'm always proud to take people from out-of-town. It's compact, walkable, festive, and close to downtown. It is also very expensive and somewhat self-limiting to moneyed retirees. As SWOH points out, the bar scene is transitioning to an older crowd (or should I say the 20 somethings who wen there in the early 00's continue to go there as they age. cincinnati life for 20-somethings at the time was to live in hyde park or clifton and spend friday/saturday night in mt adams, newport, or mlt/millions in mt lookout. this variety of types lives that can be lived in Cincinnati has since changed for the better, but mt adams still has plenty of drunk 20 somethings wandering around.)
