Deabting about switching from Dish Network which I've had for three years. However, like everything else it keeps going up and up. I was in Best Buy over the weekend and the sales assistant was telling me about Roku 3 that has over 2,000 + plus channels and I only pay for what apps I need. Does anyone have this? Is it worth leaving cable and going to this? I'm trying to cut costs and cable is the most costly right now.

We ditched cable in 2010, we have a smart tv with netflix and hulu apps built in. We pay for cable internet and then like $15/mo for netflix and hulu and we have Amazon Prime which is $100/year.. The "channels" that a Roku has are not TV channels but internet sites like "Funny or Die", youtube, etc. nothing you cant see on the internet already. If you don't pay to get Hulu or Netflix or Amazon theres not much there to bother with. If you are into live sports you will miss regular tv. We don't regret switching except every summer when it is time for the Tour de France and we have to figure out a new way to watch it.

Most of NBC and ABC are on Hulu, CBS has switched to its own premium service so we don't watch CBS anymore except through Plex. Roku has a Plex front end app if you want to set up a Plex back end on a PC to watch ripped DVDs and scrape tv channel internet content. We have a Roku and have had a Boxee and a Replay and a HTPC at different times.

^Yeah Amazon Prime is the move when it comes to this... excellent selection of shows, and with all the other Prime benefits built in, it makes a lot of sense.

SalamanderSmile did a lot better description of Roku than I could have done, but I haven't had cable for a while now and I'm happy without it. Roku is easy to use and intuitive, and the show selection is great. You'll just have to make sure you havve decent internet.

Have you looked at the Google stick? Chromecast I think it is called. I've heard it is excellent.

We have Apple TV with Netflix and Hulu subscriptions. That gives us more TV than we can possibly keep up with. The big missing piece is ESPN and live sports. But that is what sports bars are for !

While I'm still paying too much for TWC, I've been looking at all this. There's also Sling TV, which is $20 a month for several of the main channels including ESPN, ESPN2 and WatchESPN app.

Roku 3 is the way to go. I have netflix, amazon prime, sling TV, and I also pick up the following local channels using a Moho Leaf indoor antenna that I got for $30.

And if there's something I want to watch that I can't get on any of the above, I just stream it or down load it.

You would just have to watch what he accesses.... I think most all the stuff Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc. hosts is clean, but it'd be worth checking out how the parental controls work before pulling the plug and buying it.

As for Chromecast, it's worth it even if you keep cable.

Basically all it does is projects your computer screen onto your TV. So you just have to be running the Chrome browser (or at least have it on your computer) - Chromecast can be added as an extension and then you just click it whenever you want to "cast" you computer screen onto your TV. It's particularly nice for watching things like Youtube videos - perfect for doing DIY stuff.

Roku gives you the advantage of a better interface over Chromecast. So you don't have to mess with your computer if you want to watch a TV show, and you don't have to go to different URLs if you want to switch from watching a show on Amazon Prime to one on Netflix, for instance.

Both devices are cheap - IMO it's in everyone's best interest to have a Chromecast or similar device, and Roku is a nice luxury/convenience.

Just caught this - how do you get all of these channels?

I live in the middle of nowhere now so I can't get my antenna to pick up anything.
