In Columbus, Mayor Coleman's choo choo was ridiculed until they gave up on the idea. It hasn't stopped Columbus from growing. In fact, over time it's going to help continue growing because money that would be instead thrown into the choo choo sinkhole can be used for productive things in the city.

Columbus received a smart cities grant to implement tomorrow's transportation technology instead of spending money on a choo choo which is yesterday's technology.

^ Since you're on a roll here concerning public transportation in Cbus and such, let's also add these considerations...

(a) In poo-pooing light rail, Cbus realizes it may have just fumbled the ball:

(b) While Cincy gains an old choo choo, Cbus gains an old demolition derby track:

(c) A professional weighs in on when driverless vehicles will become a safe reality:
http://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/...oad-ready.html

(d) In Cbus' Downtown of the Future, a tourist*hails an autonomous taxi and mixes it up with some locals:

Choo Choo? How witty of you! Steam powered rail died over 150 years ago but because the streetcar is on tracks, you suggest it's an cute old fashioned play-thing. I'm sure it will be tough to see it succeed and prove to be a great investment in our city.

Maybe he's a senior citizen who's isolated himself in a basement playroom of long ago, where a repetitious time loop just keeps his beloved little Lionel steam engines chugging round and round.

People don't use public transportation because they don't want to ride with the riffraff. Whether it's a train or a bus, it will attract a lot of riffraff. People don't want that sitting next to them.

A bus is far cheaper to remain and the roots are flexible. Yes a choo choo is a toy for urban hipsters like yourself.

You will never be taken seriously with your 5 year old vocabulary. Please stay on the CBus board. You clearly have no idea what you're talking about. It's pathetic.

Then why is it that the cities with the best public mass transportation systems are the most desirable cities with explosive population growth?

From today's Cincinnati Enquirer, just a little, but appreciated reminder...
Overflow crowds expected for streetcar opening

He's partially correct. I know someone that lives in the Portland, OR area and he is familiar with the Slight Rail system there. People use the trains and platforms for a bathroom among other things. And you will find this is the case in most mass transit systems especially at night. In Buffalo many riders have been getting harassed by gangs of youths and it has discouraged working people from riding the bus system there. I could cite other examples but I don't have the time to do so right now. On the bright side crime on trains and busses appears to be on the decline in this country.
