Can anyone recommend a couple of places within a half hour to perhaps an hour of downtown Cincinnati which have some good hiking trails? I prefer trails that are not heavily traveled. Better yet, some that might allow me the good fortune of not running into another soul for a couple of hours. Easy to find these in New England but not sure about around here.

Any suggestions? Also, are there parking fees for a car or can you just park and hike? Like to avoid Park entrance fees if possible.

Within a half hour might be a tall order, but....

If you're willing to spend a couple bucks I highly recommend this book:

But for a quick fix, I'd look in Southeastern Indiana around Lawrenceburg. The closest I can think of to that area is Shawnee Lookout across the border in OH at its most southwestern corner.

Good luck!

Mt. Airy Forest might not be ideal for what you want, but it's certainly close. You can probably find details on the City of Cincinnati website. No fees to use the park except for renting picnic areas, lodges, etc. Also possibly Winton Woods and Miami Whitewater in the Hamilton Co. Park system.

Thanks for the suggestions. Mt. Airy or Devou will work at times but there are also times when I prefer a little peace and quiet away from people.

Checked a map and found Big Bone Lick State Park in NKY. Anyone know what this is like:

Also found East Fork State Park near Williamsburg, OH which is a few miles east of I 275.

How are the hiking trails and are they heavily used on the weekend?

Big Bone Lick isn't very big. Pun not intended. Granted I haven't been in about 10 years but I wasn't impressed. There's really great hiking in in Boone County at Boone Cliffs State Park. East Fork is nice, but can get crowded especially in the summer near the beach. I'd also recommend Woodland Mound out that way. Shawnee Lookout also has some nice trails with great history.

Thanks. I will look into these suggestions. Nothing like getting out to hike for a day without having to have anyone around you. Great way to get your bearings.

Looks like the Boone County Park is closed indefinitely. Bummer. Looked good. The other choices look like they may work.

Well, you won't get any solitude around here, that's for sure. But, if can tune out the background noise you could walk Ault PArk Trails. they are not as much used as the more popular venues like Mt Airy, Woodland mound, etc.

If you can travel and hour and a half then Bob's your uncle. But, a half hour? No way.

My kids and I love the Cincinnati Nature Center in Milford. It's usually pretty quiet on the hiking trails.

Cincinnati Nature Mobile - Mobile Site

While it's a little outside of your time range, I would suggest Yellow Springs. I always find something new to see every time we hike.

Thanks. Will look into Ault Park per your suggestion.
