Cincinnati gets most of its water from the Ohio River. Now that massive amounts of toxic chemicals have made thier way to the Ohio River basin thanks the the E Palestine derailment, is there a contingency plan to stop using the Ohio as a water source for the city? If not should residents plan to purchase bottled water fo the indefinite future?

I don’t live in the Ohio River basin, but have been following this story.

Greater Cincinnati Water Works (GCWW) put out a news release yesterday here.

https://www.cincinnati-oh.gov/water/...-contaminants/

Specifically…

<<GCWW continues to work with federal, state, and regional partners to track the spill, which is expected to arrive in the Cincinnati area either late Saturday night (Feb. 18) or early Sunday morning (Feb. 19).

GCWW will optimize its treatment processes and monitor for this chemical to ensure our plant is removing it.>>

I’m betting they will provide an update if/when any detectable toxins move within range of the water intakes.

I feel bad for the folks in East Palestine. What a mess.

GCWW announced they’re temporarily shutting down the Ohio River intakes, and switching to reserve supplies for Cincinnati.

They’ll monitor the river water quality to determine when it’s safe to re-open the intakes, and then use an enhanced treatment process once the intakes are re-opened, even if no toxins are detected.

I would tend to agree. The Ohio River is so big and these chemicals are fairly volatile - evaporating - I wouldn't think Cinci would have anything to worry about - at least not from E. Palestine. Probably should be more worried about all of the outdated septic systems between E. Palestine and Cinci.
