It amazes me that people can "hear" their own accent enough to celebrate it.

While I appreciate the sarcasm

I do think in some ways you can hear your own accent, especially where is very pronounced or even mis-pronounciations of words. Maybe it is more what you know the correct pronouciation.

As an example "water" is pronounced "wudder" or "Daughter" is "duadder"

Plus people seem to be amused by my pronounciation of "Detroit" which they exclaim I say as "DEEEtroit" but on that one i just think they have it wrong

LOL. Right about the "Detroit" thing, because to you... you sound "normal." That's the point. I believe everyone believes they are phonetically correct when they say a word. I would hope nobody goes out of their way to "accent" it unnaturally, just because "up here... we sound like this!"

Funny thing is though sometimes I really have to think before I ask for a glass of "wudder" in other parts of the country because many people don't understand what i am asking for...

It's a generally accepted fact -- in Cleveland, anyway -- that Clevelanders speak the purest form of English on the planet.

I like listening to people from Georgia. Some nice speech patterns and pronunciations there.

Nice contradiction...

Minnesota's over-used, over-hyped accent is overrated. It is real annoying for me because I am younger (25) and I am from the Twin Cities, where the accent is dying out due to the influx of new residents, cosmopolitan, etc...

Nothing worse than being in a town like Bemidji or Moorhead and hearing some 60 year old ladies or guys have a conversation. Yuck.

"Oooh, dontcha know dere's gonna be a big-time tunderstorm tanite, for pete's sakes"

The movie Fargo didn't do much to help either, lol. If you understand the Cohen Brothers, who made the movie, they make spoof films. That's their niche, all their films are kind of odd. So, you need to understand that the accents in the movie Fargo are spoofed to a certian extent, or at least over exaggerated.... But... You will come across some crazy weird accents here...

Especially amongst women and older individuals. For some reason women sound like idiots here. I remember being in California with some friends and the 2 girls I was with at the bar asked for some "Vodka"...The bartender couldn't understand them... He then mocked them and laughed and kept saying "Do you want some more vedka?" LOL
