It's not a matter of "preference". It's just a matter of who settled there and who didn't. And what does "suburban quality" have to do with race?
The topic wasn't clear so I was trying to figure out what kind of major city the person was looking for. I didn't know if the OP was looking for an urban place with a well educated decent white population- or - any kind of city with a predominately white population.
NYC, SF, and DC technically have the most well educated white populations, but they're fairly diverse cities as a whole- I didn't know if that was an issue with the OP. Was he/she looking for a predominately white city (regardless of what kind of "city" life they offer), or a place with a strong, well educated white population thriving with "city" life.
The whitest major cities in America tend to be very suburban in character. That's all I was getting at. I didn't say "cities can't be cities without non-whites"- you guys just misunderstood what I was getting at.
I always figure when someone mentions "which city has the most" or "which city has the highest population" etc. New York always comes to mind not to be biased but because New York basically has a mix of everyone, and well represented at that. Hense the city population of over 8 million.
San Diego. Scientists, doctors, and other intelligent college students graduate there every year. UCSD and SDSU are exceptional schools but UCSD is a lot more exceptional than SDSU

Just because New York has 8 million people doesn't mean it's going to be on the top of every list, for instance New York doesn't even crack the top 20 for most educated cities (people holding college degrees)

are we talking most, or percentage. new york has a different make up than more provincial cities as the ones mentioned above.
So wait were we meaning just raw number? I was thinking percentages was meant.
I personally like raw numbers... others like percentage (often to get an ego boost or paint their cities a certain way). Raw numbers show me what is actually there that you have access to. Having lots of something else too, that brings down the percentage isn't really a factor, it is actually a plus for me. This could be a negative for others.
