I definitely wouldn't say Alburquerque is a sister city to Phoenix. WAY different. And is Houston like a mini-LA for real? I've never been to either. Atlanta-Charlotte and New Orleans-Savannah/Charleston fit really well.

I've often thought about this type of cultural relationship especially in terms on my home state's cities:
Philly - Durham (universities, demographics)
Atlanta - Charlotte (as others have pointed out)
Portland, OR - Carrboro (if you've spent considerable time in either place you understand)
San Jose - Cary/RTP
Austin - Raleigh
San Fran - Asheville
Richmond - Winston Salem (colleges, tobacco, urban downtowns)

I heard someone in another thread say Pittsburgh/Charleston, WV.

Memphis/Jackson, MS is one.

And while I wouldn't say they have a big sibling/little sibling relationship (mainly because of distance), in some ways Columbia, SC is like a smaller version of Columbus, OH (both named after Christopher Columbus, state capitals located in the center of their states along a river, university towns, have an insurance industry cluster).

These are more like peer cities than big sister/little sister cities. The metros in each pair are essentially the same size (and I'd pair Columbia with Knoxville and Greenville with Chattanooga for peer city relationships).

The premise was supposed to be larger tier city paired with similar smaller tier (clear jump in size) city, ie Atlanta - Charlotte as you've listed above, but I don't believe Columbia - Greensboro or Greenville - Knoxville are clearly in separate tiers.

The last four metros are all in the same tier--MSAs of 500K-1 million.
