Houston vs the haters.

Why does everyone hate on Houston. People talk about it like it is not on the same level with certain cities, some of which, Houston has far outshined.

Houston is the 4th Largest city in the US with a population over 2M. Only 4 other cities can say they have accomplished that.
points to NY, Philadelphia, Chicago, LA and Houston

Houston is the 5th largest metro in the US with a population over 6M. Only 5 other Metros can claim that. Points to NY, Chicago, LA, DFW, Houston and Phily.

Houston has a GMP over 400Billion. Only NY, Chicago and LA has GMP's higher

Houston is also the home to more F500 companies than any other city except NY

The City of Houston has two of the top 45 busiest airports in the Country. Only NY, Chicago, and DC can also claim that.

The Southeast Texas port region(with the port of Houston leading the way)
is the busiest port system in the US, and the 9th busiest in the world.
The Port of Houston is the busiest port in the US in terms of Foreign tonnage.

The World's largest Medical Center is in Houston.
Top Notch biomedical research is performed there, and The MD Anderson Cancer Center is constantly ranked the number one hospital for cancer. (Ahead of Mayo Clinic and Johns Hopkins). MD Anderson is also ranked #6 for Ear nose and throat related problems and #10for urology

The Texas Heart Institute is ranked #4 in the Country for Heart related illnesses

The Menninger Clinic is ranked #5 for Psychiatry..

and the List goes on.
The Med Center is also home to many excellent Universities such as Baylor College of Medicine which is ranked No. 1 in the US for Molecular & Cellular Biology; Molecular and Human Genetics; and Pediatrics, ranked number 2 in the US for Biochemistry and number 8 for Neurosciences

The Johnson Space Center in Houston is home to mission control, which coordinates and monitors all human spaceflight for the United States, and directs all Space Shuttle missions and activities aboard the International Space Station.
Johnson Space Center also leads NASA’s flight-related scientific and medical research programs. Technologies developed for spaceflight are now in use in many areas of medicine, energy, transportation, agriculture, communications and electronics.

Houston is one of the few cities in the US with permanent, professional, resident companies in all major art disciplines (Theater, Opera, Symphony, Orchestra and Ballet). It is also home to the 2nd highest concentration of Theater seats in the US. And it achieved all of this without the benefits of having a Rockefeller or a Vanderbilt.

Houston is an awesome City, and has achieved a lot in its relatively short time on the national stage.

I know you all make snide remarks and jokes, but I see it as jealousy. Plain and simple. I rarely hear these remarks from people from cities, like NY, Chicago or LA, because these cities have nothing to prove, but other cities always feel the need to put us down.

Okay, if Houston has not achieved the big leagues what is it missing? What is the big thing preventing it from functioning as a world class City? It is classified as a Beta world City and is rising in the ranks, why does everyone think it should not be mentioned when discussing the US top cities?

People from other cities, why the hate?

Do you honestly think this only happens to Houston on these boards? I guess you have missed every single "Los Angeles vs. _______" thread that has ever existed. I don't even need to go onto to say some of the really sick things people here have said about Los Angeles, but it hasn't really affected my life one bit.

This happens to EVERY city in the United States on City Data (at least, in City vs City), even New York and Chicago. There's no such thing as a "sacred cow" in here, but rather various people screaming the loudest how great their city is and putting down other cities in the process. The reason why it makes such a big difference to you is that its happening to your city.

You shouldn't let people's perceptions on these boards get to you, because in real life, there will always be people who have different ideas and different thoughts. That's what makes America great; the fact that we are allowed to so openly debate about anything without any repercussions.

Every person has a right to feel that their city is important in some way shape or form because it contributes to the greatness of America as a whole. It doesn't really matter if someone thousands of miles away, or even someone who's a mile away hates where you live. A huge percentage people will always have a special attachment to where they are from, be it some mansion in the Hamptons to some dung shack in Africa. That's why this forum always has some really heated debates is because we as people identify so closely with certain places that we feel an attack on that place, is an attack on us personally.

In reality though, it doesn't matter. Just as long as YOU know that YOUR city is great and is doing everything it can to better itself, that's the most important thing. Every single place on the planet is in constant change, and some places weather through it better than others. What's important is to take pride in where you're from but also, understand that every person has a right to have pride in where they are from.

Personally speaking, that's why I don't participate in the "Most important city" threads. It's pointless in the end because what may be important today may not be tomorrow. That is life.

I don't think I have heard anyone say that LA is not important nationally. If they did I don't think anyone would pay attention to them because you would have to be a major troll to say that. But huge number of people on here seem to think Houston is not on the same level as places it competes well with.

Lately its been happening to Los Angeles more than Houston. (I mean the bashing) Comparatively to a month ago the Houston bashing actually has simmered down.

Anyways, I really don't care what people say. This is a site, it doesn't affect my life, and honestly, its one persons opinion for a place that has like 13 million people (Los Angeles) or 6 million people (Houston).

LOL yeah, their words are irrelevant to say the least.

PS- People on this board do make fun of Los Angeles the same way too, many on here still don't think its America's 2nd city...LOL livin in the 80's huh guys?

You missed the whole point of what I was trying to say. Let people say that "X is so and so" or "X doesn't have so and so" because they have every right to. If its a valid criticism of Houston, then try in some small little way change that. That's how places become better. There's no place above criticism.

Some things are better to accept, and move on. Realize that Houston, LA, NYC, or whatever place isn't the bees-knees for everyone. If they don't find it important, so the f*ck what? It's important to YOU, and that should matter more than some strangers on the internet.

I passionately hate this video with all my heart. Mofos used a picture of my house and its backyard, didn't even tell us. Some random poster on this site posted it for the first time when I noticed it. Talk about shock...
I need to find out who this guy is and ask him why the hell he was snooping around in my neighborhood taking pictures of my backyard and house and stuff. Creeper guy. I showed my neighbor this like 2 months ago and he was like "WTF...".

Anyways, you have to let it go, what people say doesn't mean anything, its like one freakin person on some blogger site. They're such cyber warriors aren't they? They should have enlisted in cyber war against (insert competing nation here) cause they're just so damn good at online web frenzy!

You really shouldn't let weirdos on here get to you, lol read their posts, get an "LOL" out of it, especially from the ones that can't even list their source but make their own predictions. And then move on to do your own thing!

LOL, I did get what you were saying, but the majority of things people say about Houston are far from the truth. Most are not even familiar with the place. I know that nowhere isn't the bees knees for everyone, but a lot on here just seem to think the sunbelt cities are inferior to everywhere else

many of the LA comparisons are valid though.
Comparing LA to Chicago or NY is far from an insult.

However it is not cities of its rank Houston is often compared to. People find it hard to think of Houston as a world class city and wanna rank it with places such as Jacksonville or San Antonio

Let them have those ideas about Houston. I can tell that you really love the city, and want to share all its good aspects with as many people as possible because you want to show them this "great thing" that you have that could be theirs.

However, there are just some people, especially on this site, who are beyond any reason. There's no point in wasting energy on people like that, but rather on the people who actually want a discussion. That's why the "ignore" feature is especially helpful, because after a while, you realize its the same people over and over again parroting the same line. That's their life.

I enjoy this site as a hobby, because I love traveling, love geography, love demographics, love statistics, love urban planning, love history, love politics, etc etc. Even if there is only ONE person worth posting responses back to on CD, it still makes it worthwhile.

For the record, I wish my city had a Texaplex advantage. The only Texaplex advantage is having the Texaplex's population stuffed into a much smaller space. And that's not really much of an advantage.

honestly i think its the fact that a lot of ppl can't fathom a texas city rising into the "big league" group of cities in the u.s.

maybe a lot of ppl on CD are visual learners and need to see it for themselves before they give houston the respect the OP feels it deserves.
