SF is the chicest urban environment outside of Manhattan in my opinion...obviously that is very arbitrary and totally subject to personal opinion and I readily acknowledge that, but there is a veneer of class and sophistication in urban SF that seems organic to the place. Not contrived or fake.

Chicago and Boston also exude tons of urban class. Philadelphia too.

I agree with you, but Boston and Chicago also have some very classy areas.

I'm a little surprised by the results of the poll so far--but it's nothing I would even bother arguing against. These are quite simply just 4 incredible cities and literally set the standard for urbanity. Take notes Atl, Houston, Charlotte, etc, etc, etc.

Not gonna vote on this one. I think you could make a case for any of these. San Francisco and Boston arguably have some denser neighborhoods (Chinatown/Tenderloin, SF; North End, Boston), but Philly and Chicago are more urban over a wider range of area. All 4 are great cities in my opinion.

I voted Chicago, because its America's 2nd city and is a straight baller, its got the potential and in 1950 was overall far more dense than what it is today. The city density at that point was 17,000-18,000 people per square mile. Then after Chicago, I would have to say its San Francisco.

Tough one. These four plus New York are easily the 5 most urban cities in the country.

I'd say:
1/2. Chicago/San Francisco
3/4. Boston/Philadelphia

VERY close though.

Why? DC is definitely urban, but less so than the cities mentioned. That's mainly due to the fact that DC's downtown takes up a massive part of the city and is virtually empty once businesses shut down.

I will say Georgetown and Dupont Circle are awesome (especially their nightlife).

I can see saying DC is roughly in league with these cities in terms of urbanism. All of these cities are certainly closer in urbanism to DC than NYC.

That being said, I can't really see a case for DC being MORE urban or the MOST urban of these cities.

Honestly, I can't really see a case for Philly or Boston (the North End only goes so far) either.

I tend to believe it is either SF or Chi.
