It doesn't sound like you are all that familiar with NYC. There are literally hundreds of thousands of families living in Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx and Staten Island. Sure much of the southern 2/3rds of Manhattan are not all that family friendly, but I grew up in Manhattan (Washington Heights) and that area is still filled with tons of families.

And nearly all metros grow, but population growth in the city is important. Doesn't Chicago pride itself on having a "NY style" city core? Now it's all about suburban growth? LOL.

Look at Detroit, declining hopeless city surrounded by growing suburbs. Chicago's future? Not good at all.

No, I think theres a big misconception here considering people like you continue to bait Chicagoans.

Chicago's city core is Chicago, not NY. Theres nothing NY about something that was initially invented in Chicago.

Well much of what you are saying is not accurate. New York City is huge, what you describe may be true to roughly 20 square miles, but there is no shortage of families in NYC.

What do families have to do with income gap, though? Not really sure what youre getting at. Im not saying there arent families in the city?

Theres been a ton of development in the last 10 years in the city, condos, office towers, etc. Tons of gentrification in the city, Brooklyn and Queens. Its happening slowly, but eventually people are going to get priced out and the only ones who will be able to live there are the wealthy. How can you deny this?

I know mad people who have left because of it.

Because London, Paris and New York are global supercities with economical, cultural and political influences that stretch across borders and continents...

As many of you said, population loss is population loss. Every city has different circumstances as to why that happens, but it's a fact that both Paris and Chicago have loss huge populations, regardless of the reason.
Can't compare Chicago to Paris. Paris is almost twice as dense as Chicago, 52K/sq mile vs 11K/sq mile with a lot of old buildings and not as many highrises as Chicago.

I was responding to your post that NYC will become a place only for the wealthy. I grew up poor in Manhattan, and I have seen many families leave Manhattan for places like Staten Island, Queens, Northern Bronx. My point is there are and will continue to be many middle class families in the city, maybe not in Manhattan.

So 8 million people will be squeezed out of a city because of 250,000 or so high-income earners?

He mean urban density like in New York with 27K people per sq mile.
Density as far as I know was not invented in Chicago and Chicago is not even close in density to New York.
